Marking their fifth effort since the band s inception in 2007, the album was released in early October and saw the genre-defying Afrikaans alt rockers make a welcome neti pot return to the scene following the success of 2011 s Wie s Bang.
Reports indicate that the new material has been received well both commercially and on-stage tunes like Here Man and Sweef are unapologetic crowd pleasers in the mould of earlier hits like Verdoof, Vergiftig, Verskoon My , with early single Moregloed seeing the album to a week at the top of the iTunes charts in SA following a well-executed marketing plan.
Produced by legendary artist Theo Crouse of Springbok Nude Girls at his studio in Bellville, the album is polished and clinical. Van Coke Kartel have been known for sporadic changes in their approach to song-writing over the years, and Bloed signifies the least sonic progression between albums to date for the group. Lyrically, it s clear that the challenges of suburban life are the main issues setting Francios Van Coke s pen to paper. Whilst this is certainly novel, it lacks the raw vitriol that gave their earlier material such cultural purchase. The suburban-crisis content neti pot works on songs like In Die Agtergrond but then serves only to bloat tracks neti pot like Klein Wêreld (As SA Jou Wêreld Is) , which smacks of filler.
There are several gems to be found on this album fans of Wie s Bang won t be disappointed. But for many pundits with a more discerning ear, it might be a bit too easy to find fault in between the stronger songs. Van Coke Kartel have released a solid album that, whilst ticking all the boxes you d expect them to tick, might leave them flagging in the wake of contemporaries that are alive to the challenge of adapting to the post-MK soundscape. Take note however the songs they can now add to their arsenal of live material will still leave you gasping for breath at the next packed venue or festival neti pot you will eventually see them at again.
