Auto Summary. County council with a high incidence of prostate cancer had a 20 percent lower mortality from the disease than counties that had a low incidence of prostate cancer. It shows a study based on data in Cancer, Causes of Death Register and the National Prostate Cancer Register.
The utility of PSA testing for early diagnosis of prostate cancer is controversial even though a large well-designed European randomized trial (ERSPC) demonstrated a reduced mortality from prostate cancer screening. In Sweden, PSA testing should be used more frequently during the early 2000s in some counties, 17 day diet while the use continued to be low in other counties.
This study examined differences in mortality from prostate cancer between counties. Prostate cancer-specific mortality and mortality (any cause) among men with prostate cancer 17 day diet were compared with the background population. The incidence of metastases from prostate cancer was also studied. Due to a large part of the Swedish male population were included in the study, the analysis of more than 7 million person with more than 2500 deaths 17 day diet from prostate cancer.
In the eight counties with the highest incidence, mortality and incidence of metastasis about 20 percent lower than in the six counties with the lowest incidence in the period 2000-2009 17 day diet (Figure 1). In comparison with a previous period, 1990-1999, the mortality rate during 2000-2009 in counties with high incidence, and a smaller decrease was also observed in counties with low incidence. The data in Prostate Cancer Registry confirmed that men diagnosed in counties with high incidence had lower PSA values, less often aggressive or locally advanced tumors, and more often underwent radical prostatectomy. Since the incidence of prostate cancer 17 day diet is partly due to the frequency of PSA testing in a population, these results can be interpreted as PSA testing and subsequent diagnosis and early treatment reduces mortality from prostate cancer.
The reduction was observed agree well with the results of a large European randomized 17 day diet study of PSA testing (ERSPC) and provides further support the efficacy of PSA testing on mortality from prostate cancer. General 17 day diet screening is not recommended in Sweden since the balance between the benefits of PSA screening, ie, lower mortality, and adverse effects of screening is unclear. Negative effects of PSA screening 17 day diet involves unnecessary examinations of men without cancer, treatment of men with harmless cancer and side effects of treatment, particularly sexual side effects but also the risk of urinary 17 day diet incontinence [Stampfer M, et al. J Natl Cancer Inst. Epub March 7, 2014]. Intensive efforts are currently underway to reduce these negative side effects of PSA testing.
