Acute bronchitis and pneumonia are two diseases blood clots that can be, in some cases, difficult to differentiate and this is important because treatment is completely different. The first generally result blood clots spontaneously while the second requires an antibiotic treatment. One technique that allows us to differentiate diagnostic chest radiograph is which is expensive, exposes the patient to radiation (often needlessly) and not available in certain centers. For all this European study tested whether the determination of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin blood clots along with physical examination and medical history would improve diagnostic sensitivity. The study in 2820 patients diagnosed with improved sensitivity of PCR using mainly ruled out the presence of an infection.
Van Vugt SF et al. Use of Serun C reactive protein and procalcitonin Concentrations in Addition to symptoms and sings to predict pneumonia in patients presenting to primary care with acute cough: blood clots Diagnostic study. BMJ 2013 April 30, 346: f2450.
