The incidence pink eye symptoms of brain tumors is increasing in Australia | Lennart Hardell blog
The incidence of primary brain tumors were studied in two areas in Australia with over 7 million inhabitants, the state of South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, during the time period 2000-2008. The survey was comprehensive and all diagnoses were microscopically verified. The study included all 13 databases in pathological clinics and 24 neurosurgical units. It is so far the only one in the world of its kind with comprehensive registration of brain tumors.
The incidence of brain tumors increased by about 35% from 2000 to 2008 annually by 3.5%, which was statistically significant. Especially large increase was seen for the most malignant form of glioma (glioblastoma multiforme). It is the type of tumor that we've seen cordless phones provide the greatest increase in risk for.
Increased incidence was also observed for meningioma for men. There was however decreasing incidence of acusticusneurinom (Schwannoma). The authors discuss shortly after treatment of this tumor type with stereotactic surgery without microscopic assessment may be a contributing factor.
