Here Man, Save Rock and Roll – Van Coke Kartel “Bloed,Sweet & Trane” CD Review | SA Music Scene
If, by now, you have no idea who Van Coke Kartel are, you ve been hibernating underneath a rock in Siberia for the past six years. Bloed, Sweet en Trane, VCK s fifth album, hit the shelves on 4 October and immediately garnered success by selling out almost instantly at most outlets, and keeping Miley Cyrus out of the top spot on the SA iTunes Album Chart (for a while at least).
The first track on the album, Die Dag , opens slowly meningioma with a neat little bassline from Myburgh, smooth vocals from Van Coke and then a smashing riff from Kossew which leads us into pure VCK madness given pace by Oosthuizen s smashing meningioma drums.
Moregloed will have you reaching for a pack of strepsils the morning after a VCK gig. It begs you to destroy your vocal chords and with the epic vocal hook of ons is nie alleen nie there s no way you can t oblige. Niemand Is Meer Heilig Nie follows straight after and is indeed another balls-smashing, stagediving, anger inducing, hard rock track that s sure to get the boys in the middle of the crowd spilling Black Label on each other s leathers.
A track that deserves special mention is Sweef . It s hard. Not hard as in hard as Die Buffel s fists – hard as in Goeie fok, dis hard . I found myself cranking up the volume and just staring at my stereo with a look of disbelief on my face and a tingly sensation meningioma in my pants – always a good sign.
Take Here Man for instance. Allegedly, it s an early crowd favourite and the appeal is easy to spot. The whoaho, whoaho backing vocals will surely be chanted along to by drunken schoolboys without much effort from the band, but to me it just sounds like a hard rock version of Jack Parow s Hierdie is `n liedjie oor hoekom jy nie ander man se meisie moet stiek nie . The best part of the song is actually the outro, which is just too little too late.
The rest of the tracks on the album all take on a very generic hard rock sound, something that I never thought I d even think to say of VCK. The whole album feels kind of rushed despite the fact that they spent a year and a half on it. To paraphrase the quintessential medieval comic movie A Knight s Tale, it s like the lyrics have not quite been weighed, the music not quite been measured, and therefore, the album is left wanting.
There is no doubt in my mind that this rock outfit is comprised of four of the country s best musos. They know it. We know it. There is no reason meningioma to prove it to us. Maybe it s because VCK s simplistic and raw first album made me a lifelong fan, and maybe I m still biased towards the sound that made me adore them in the first place, but I find the solos self-indulgent. And maybe that s why I m wondering where the angst in Van Coke s vocals has gone, and thinking that the sound is too complex.
Most of all I just don t get the album. Since when do they sing about shitty jobs and being content on the weekends with an uitsig en `n ligte bries om in af te koel, son sak in die agtergrond ? When I listen to VCK, I want to escape the lousy whirlpool meningioma that is my reality, not be reminded of it. I want to be inspired to go out and break shit and be able to blame it on the music. But with this album I just kind of, you know, can t.
Despite the shortcomings meningioma of the album, it s still VCK and there is no doubt in my mind that it ll be greeted with nothing less than great successes and maybe even an award or two. If they still hand those out. So why is it bipolar then?
On the one hand you have the massive ups, where you want to rock your socks off, and on the other hand an undeniable, overwhelming feeling of Meh, I just can t be arsed to even listen to this. Hopefully seeing them live again will change my opinion. To summarize this unwarranted soapbox rant: Bloed, Sweet en Trane is not a bad album, it s just not as good as I wished it was.
